A great football book. But it is more than that. This book packs emotional punch.The book covers the Carmel Catholic High School football team as it battles through an injury-plagued but winning season. Kerr focuses his story on several key players, the man who taught them peewee football, and their H.S. coaches.
But my favorite sections are about Marion Biere who adopted Carmel's defensive back LeRon when he was three days old and she was a sixty-one year old grandmother. But he needed her! An amazing woman!

An important narrative that speaks to the impact that community, mentorship, family, leadership, and faith can play in the development of our young people today. While the football season serves as the structure to guide the story - the in-depth research on the background story related to the coaches, the players, and the factors that impact their stories is weaved seamlessly into the tale of the Carmel family so as to help illuminate many of the forces that helped develop the people in the book into who (and how) they became what they are today. While likely more insightful for insiders to Carmel Catholic High School - the themes are timeless and often overlooked as we all look for ways to develop our kids into adults. An enjoyable read that serves as a bit of history that led to the development of the community - the book provides more than its share of enjoyable tidbits that will show how humor can sometimes be the best tonic. Coach Andy Bitto is doing very good work in his part of the world - read this book to see how we can all benefit from an active pursuit of community in our families lives.
This is a marvelous read... John Kerr has authentically captured the highs, lows and messy static of one season. Bitto and the entire Carmel staff have created an environment that is a model for any high school program (regardless of sport or extra-curriculum activity). We should all be thankful that men like Andy Bitto don't seek fortune, but rather invest their lives in our children.
As an avid football fan and reader of sports literature in general, I immediately gravitated towards this book (not to mention that I attended a Catholic high school in IL). The author, Jon Kerr, transcends much more than just football in this classic narrative. It’s an entertaining story about tradition, family, faith and teamwork. In my opinion, would make a great read for any age, from high schoolers to more mature audiences. Definitely going to use this as a stocking stuffer for Xmas! -Jim McMahon
Boys in Brown is an amazing story about everyday life, triumph over struggle, and football (of course.) I had family that attended Carmel and played football, so initially that's what drew me to the book. But after a few chapters, it becomes less about the school and more about the everyday strength of the human spirit at any age, and why we make the choices we do - and what happens afterwards not knowing where they will lead. This book reminded me to take a chances on people, and how football and teamwork and kindness may not give us life's answers, as much as they empower us to "live life's questions."
Enjoyed this high school football story very much. Well written, informative, and shows all sides of the football program. In-depth content regarding the life journey of a young player. Also, close to home, because I know the people. But still recommend to any reader who loves the game of football. A great idea for holiday gifts for all ages.
What a well-told story highlighting a high school football team's journey through the season. Great narrative about sports and the life lessons that kids learn along the way. It captures every angle goth on and off the field - never losing sight of what is really important and reinforcing the Catholic values instilled by the program/school. I loved following the team with the game recaps, accounts of the practice sessions, pre/post game rituals, and how they dealt with adversity during the year. Learning about the players, parents, and coaches really gives you a sense for what this program is all about. It's the background stories off the gridiron that really makes it a gripping story to read. You quickly realize that the book is about much more than just football. It would certainly make for a great movie, too!
Jon Kerr writes in a refreshing, unique style that is entertaining, witty, informative and precise, without being preachy or cliched.
That in itself is a treat these days, in a world full of mind-numbing tweets and scandalous Facebook posts, in his book The Boys in Brown are well-crafted sentences, thoughtful paragraphs and chapters that flow; the mark of excellent writing.
Further, he's able to weave personal stories and the journey of a Lake County, IL Catholic high school football team, effortlessly and smoothly.
I also enjoyed how Jon reached back into history to give context. It's far more than a book about football, teamwork and pride.
It's a book about what it means to be part of a community, each member serving an important role; And here's something we often forget Actions count. Beliefs count. Good deeds count.
And if I might add, Jon brings to life what it means to be lucky in America. We live in a nation full of opportunity, challenges,
and individual successes, and every person living here has a chance to make it. Great job Jon.
